Council of Trent - The Castle

Castle of Trent

The City of Trent in northern Italy was the place where the papal Council convened to break the power of the Protestant Reformation. At the Council, dominated by the newly organized Jesuit order, the bishop of Rheggio announced on January 18, 1562, that the Protestants could never defend Sunday sacredness if they continued to offer as their authority, "the Bible and the Bible only, for there is no Bible command for the sanctification of Sunday". The bishop claimed it was the power of the papacy that changed the day of worship.
